Moonwreckers is singer/guitarist Matt Galbraith (Monument Monument); lead guitarist Paul Stiem; bassist Jamus Sumner; and drummer Matt Konkle. Recorded with the help of engineer Erik Maluchnik at the legendary Ferndale studio The Tempermill beginning in July 2022, the 12 tracks on “Why Look Here?” incorporate the sounds of kids raised on 1990s-era MTV and rock radio with the indie and emo scenes that the bandmates would graduate into as young men. It’s sensitive but still fun, thoughtful but never stuffy.

Dazzling production, and double-dazzling to listen on headphones (as folks should!) Evocative vocals, anthemic rhythms, atmospheric guitars, and the choruses always take off.

I had the pleasure of getting a sneak-peek into the Moonwreckers debut album called “Why Look Here?” From the moment I hit play, the hairs on my arms stood on end. The opening song “Coping” melts with melody and emotion. The firm drums and bass guide you through each song as the guitars and vocals reveal lush and vivid soundscapes. All twelve tracks on “Why Look Here?” are superb musically and lyrically. If I had to pick a few shining stars I’d start with “May Grays”, “Failures”, and “I Started this God Damn Fire”. If you dig the music of The Pixies, Radiohead, and The Doves, you’ll find happiness on this compelling new album from Moonwreckers.

After having the opportunity to listen to Moonwreckers debut album, Why Look Here? I was keen to check them out live. The album features gorgeous songwriting with nuanced music traversing a range of dynamics in an alt-90s emotional vein. Could they conjure the magic of this recording on stage?

I’m here to report that Moonwreckers did just that. The thoughtful reflective vocals, the nuanced and dynamic sound – it was all there. The band put on an engaging show that displayed their love of music. The sizable crowd at Small’s embraced their impassioned performance with open arms.
